From award-winning writer Máirtín Mac Cana, Don Eugenio is an epic drama set amidst the Thirty Years' War. At the start of June 1640, the French have mobilised three-quarters of the military in all of France. But en route, the army of eighty thousand, led by three of the finest marshals that France has ever produced, discovers a small force of fifteen hundred Irish soldiers, defending the old town of Arras...

"Reading Don Eugenio transported me back in time to when I first discovered the works of Alexandre Dumas. There’s that same blend of adventure, intrigue, emotional sweep, and elegant historic detail that made Dumas unforgettable. In many ways, the author feels like a modern heir to that legacy, revitalizing the spirit of classic historical fiction while bringing a fresh and contemporary voice. It’s a rare pleasure to find a book that rekindles that sense of wonder you thought you’d outgrown" Christina Ursica

"It is a very rare thing to pick up a book and be loath to put it down again. Such was my experience with “Don Eugenio”. It lands you in an oft forgotten period of Irish history some decades after “The Flight of the Earls”. And while it doesn’t take place in Ireland it echoes with the ancient beat of Irish Gaeldom. A story of honour, of longing and preparation. The small town of Arras becomes a battle ground resembling the last stand of the Spartans at Thermopylae. Here, Eoghan Ruadh Ó Néill will face overwhelming odds and perfect his military genius." - Tom Ó Brannagáin, RTE and TG4 Presenter

Don Eugenio by Máirtín Mac Cana Set during the siege of Arras in 1640, tells the story of its Irish defenders who wage a skilful defence against overwhelming French forces willing to stop at nothing to take the town. Fighting on behalf of the Spanish, legendary Irish warrior-in-exile, Colonel Eoghan Ruadh Ó Néill marshals his troops with expertise, aplomb and daring strategy, causing much disruption to his foe. Reminiscent of Sun Tzu’s ‘Art of War’, the narrative is so thorough in its depiction of military engagements and the planning thereof, that it is hard to imagine there is no real-world experience behind the telling. Tales about the past are rarely told without correspondence to the present. In Don Eugenio, Mac Cana manages to balance an eye for detail with a knowing awareness of issues that will be pertinent to modern readers. Philosophical musings abound on several topics: national identity; the inner conflict of fighting for foreign powers while nursing sincere, long-term ambitions to return home and free Ireland from the ravages of the oppressor. As a novel, it reads like an epic adventure, told in cinematic detail, a rich tapestry that deserves a ‘Barry Lyndonesque’ rendition for the screen – this could be a superb film! On other levels, Mac Cana leads the reader to consider notions out of step with much current thinking – ideals such as self-sacrifice, working for a greater good, nobility and moral courage in victory and defeat, ways of thinking that may seem strange in a world that promises a life tailored to consumer preferences.
